Art by Lorie Auguste.
I have created art my entire life. A am not a political or social artist…no deep message, just art meant to be enjoyed at face value. I have explored many mediums. All have brought me joy, but it wasn’t until I discovered Free Motion Embroidery (FME), that I truly found my passion. Early I had done felting pieces, then embroidered over them for added texture and detail. It’s a fun and forgiving technique. About 10 years ago while researching, I came across the process of using water-soluble fabric as the base. I have never looked back.
I take an embroidery hoop and load it with the water-soluble fabric. The thread from the sewing machine is my paint. I move the hoop around to create my piece. After “Painting” my design onto the fabric, the fabric is washed away, leaving only the thread behind. The process is fascinating and challenging…miss a stitch and the whole piece can come apart when washing the fabric away. When designing my pieces, I focus on the negative spaces – as these will allow for wonderful shadows when mounted. I “float” mount my pieces to add depth and shadow. The shadows are part of the finished piece and will change with the light source. – Lorie Auguste
